Gerald DeVere MacDonald, age 82, of York, Nebraska, and formerly of Scranton, Iowa, passed away at his residence on Sunday, October 27, 2012.

A private funeral service was held at the Dahn and Woodhouse Funeral Home in Scranton on Tuesday, October 30, 2012 with Rev. Charles Thompson officiating. Burial was in the Scranton Township Cemetery. Casket bearers were Paul MacDonald, Jason MacDonald, Adam MacDonald, Alex Smith, Craig MacDonald, and Stacy MacDonald. The family suggests memorials be sent to David MacDonald at 10205 S. 175th Circle, Omaha, Nebraska 68136-1989.

Born on July 7, 1930 on his family’s farm near Scranton, he was the son of Maxwell and Mildred (Duff) MacDonald. Gerald graduated from Scranton High School in 1947. He worked as a hired man for his uncle John and aunt Cora MacDonald. He was married to Patricia Arleen Thomas on December 11, 1949 at the Methodist Church in Scranton. In 1952 they moved to the Duff 80 acre farm. He farmed this land and did custom farming until 1959 when he quit farming due to a back injury. He then began his career as a salesman. Gerald continued in sales and became a regional sales manager with Felco Land O’Lakes Cooperative until he retired in 1987. Gerald and Patricia have lived in York, Nebraska since 1971. He was a lifetime member of the Mason’s and was active in the Shrine. Gerald enjoyed fishing, playing his coronet and listening to big band music.

Gerald is survived by his wife Patricia of York, Nebraska; a daughter LynNette Turner and her husband Patrick of Dixon, Missouri; two sons: David MacDonald and his wife LeAnna of Omaha, Nebraska, and John MacDonald of Colorado Springs, Colorado; six grandchildren; five great grandchildren; two sister-in-laws Gertrude Smith of Milford, Iowa, and Eleanor MacDonald of Texas; and several nieces and nephews.

Gerald is preceded in death by his parents; a daughter LeeAnn Regier, a grandson Kevin Bayer, a granddaughter Tonya Tegart, a great-grandson Sean Thomas MacDonald, and a brother Wayne MacDonald.
