Betty Hopkins

Betty Hopkins, age 77, of Boone and the Westhaven Community, died October 25, 2012, at the Boone County Hospital.

Funeral Services will be Saturday, October 27, 2012, at 10 a.m. at the Schroeder Memorial Chapel at Sixth and Marshall. Burial will be in the Pleasant Hill Cemetery, southwest of Boone.

Betty was born in Boone on May 2, 1935, the daughter of Clifford and Anna (Farlene) Platter.

She married Merlin Davis. The couple later divorced.

On August 1, 1959, Betty married Russell Hopkins at Omaha, Nebraska. They later divorced.

Betty worked in Boone as a clerk at Alco, Pamida, and Williams Drug.

She also worked at the Boone News Republican and United Building Center. Betty retired in 2000.

Betty enjoyed bowling, gardening, puzzles, jigsaw puzzles, camping, and attending her grandchildren’s school events.

She also enjoyed baking and sitting outside in the sun.

She is preceded in death by her parents, her former husbands, a son Timothy Davis, three brothers, four sisters, a son-in-law Tom Babberl, and her special family friend Richard Boersma, whom she thought of as a son.

Betty is survived by two sons, Tony Davis and wife Brenda of Pensacola, Florida, and Jeffrey Hopkins of Boone; two daughters Brenda Lumley and husband Wayne of Boone and B.J. Setzer and husband Barney of Hudson, North Carolina; daughter-in-law Jane Boersma (the late Richard Boersma’s wife) of Boone; nine grandchildren; and eight great-grandchildren.

Friends may call at the Schroeder Memorial Chapel on Friday from 2 until 8 p.m. where the family will be present from 6 until 8 p.m.

Visitation continues Saturday from 8 a.m. until service time.

In memory of Betty, memorials may be directed to the family.
