Fall has arrived and there’s no better time to be on Johnston’s recreational trails. There’s still lots of color in the trees and the weather has been absolutely fabulous.
Building and connecting Johnston’s trail system has been a priority of the city for years. And the results really show. We currently have over 30 miles of trails in Johnston with more under construction. This year we added the new Augustine Trail that runs along Beaver Creek, beginning at 62nd Avenue and connecting to the trail on 86th Street across from Beaver Creek Elementary School. We now have parallel trails on the north and south sides of N.W. 62nd Avenue with an underpass to help trail users get safely from one side to the other. Also Pioneer has constructed a trail on the west side of their main facilities that connects into the trail system at the Beaver Creek Natural Resource Area.
Even with all of the trails that we have and with more under construction, there is still much to do. We need to build trails on the north side our community to align with N.W. Beaver Drive and connect into the rest of our trail system. We also need to start planning for the trails on our northwest side to connect into the trail system that leads to the High Trestle Trail and beyond.
To celebrate our trails and to help raise funds to build and maintain them, John Urban and other Johnston residents have planned a special walk/run. On Saturday, November 10, the First Annual Mayor’s Run for the Trails will take place. The 5k race will start and finish at the Johnston High School, 6501 N.W. 62nd Avenue. The race course will include the new recreational trail along Beaver Creek. All proceeds from the race will go to benefit Johnston recreational trails. 5k participants will receive a long sleeve t-shirt and refreshments after the race.
