Voula P. Bennett, 79, peacefully passed away on Friday, October 12, 2012, at Mercy Hospice in Johnston. A funeral service will be held at 10:30 a.m. on Tuesday, October 16, at The Greek Orthodox Church of St. George, located at 35th Street & Cottage Grove in Des Moines. Burial will follow at Glendale Cemetery in Des Moines.
Voula was born on January 13, 1933, in Aegion, Greece, to Panos B. and Stavroula Kolokethas Rozos. She moved to America during the 1950’s to attend The University of Iowa where she obtained a Bachelor’s degree in Education. She later on earned a Master’s degree in Education from Drake University. For 31 years, she was employed as an educator with the Des Moines Schools, until her retirement in 1995. A few of her many passions included teaching, traveling, cooking, dancing, playing cards and book club. She was an active member of St. George where she served on various committees. Following her retirement, she worked at the Civic Center, YMCA, and volunteered in the schools. Voula had a contagious passion for life and will be missed by the many people who knew and loved her.
She is survived by her son, Steve P. Bennett and his wife, Liz of Windsor Heights; daughter, Maria T. Bennett of Des Moines; and three grandchildren, Elise, Erin and Chris Bennett. Voula was preceded in death by her parents, brother and ex-husband.
The family will greet friends from 5 to 7 p.m. on Monday, October 15, at Iles Funeral Homes, Westover Chapel in Des Moines, where a Greek Trisagion Service will begin at 7 p.m.
