A Celebration of Life service for John Burk, 80, of Jefferson, will be held 7:00pm Wednesday, October 17, 2012 at Slininger-Rossow Funeral Home in Jefferson. Visitation with the family will follow until 9:00pm. Interment will take place at a later date at the Jefferson Cemetery.
Friends may call at Slininger-Rossow Funeral Home after 11:00am Wednesday. In lieu of flowers, memorials are suggested to establish an endowment fund to the Greene County Historical Society.
John Burk, devoted and loving husband, father and grandfather died Sunday, October 14, 2012 at his home surrounded by his entire family after a brief respiratory illness.
John was born on the family farm near Rippey, Iowa on February 24, 1932. He graduated from Rippey High School in 1949. In 1952, he was married to Jeane Langford of Jefferson, Iowa. They celebrated their 60th wedding anniversary in July of 2012.
After service in the Army, John attended business school in Pueblo, Colorado and subsequently was employed by Ideal Livestock Mfg. and Scranton Mfg. as a purchasing agent from 1959 – 1997 never missing a day of work.
After John retired, he was active with many service projects in Jefferson. He volunteered his service for Meals on Wheels, The Greene County Food Pantry and the Greene County Historical Society. He had a vast array of hobbies which included finding, collecting and refinishing antiques, genealogy, cooking, gardening and watching golf tournaments. John enjoyed playing sports, particularly tennis. He played in a foursome every week until he was 75 years. His passion however was bicycling. He put 50,000 miles on his bicycle riding the trail in Jefferson and around town.
John’s greatest joy was spending time with his family. John and Jeane hosted many gatherings at their homes down through the years for family and friends. His gift of hospitality made all feel welcome and at home.
John was preceded in death by his parents, Chester and Mary (Peninger) Burk. He is survived by his wife, Jeane, his sister Dorothy Sheckler of Bonita Springs, Florida, and a brother Duane (Pat) Burk of Urbandale, Iowa; his daughter Julia (Tom) Yepsen of Jefferson; his daughter Jan (Phil) Siglin of Jefferson and his daughter Jill (Ty) Spatz of Hastings, Nebraska; grandchildren Jared (Tasha) Yepsen of Ely, Iowa, Laura (Matthew) Krohne of Liberty, Missouri, Dennis Healy of Jefferson and Michael (Angie) Healy of Jefferson; and a great grandson, Braxton Yepsen.Information provided by: Slininger-Rossow Funeral Home 119 West Lincolnway PO Box 108 Jefferson, Iowa 50129 515.386.2171 www.sliningerrossowfuneralhome.com
