That following Sunday brings another opportunity for Ankeny folks to turn work into play. As the lushness around us starts to dry and the trees slowly change and lose their leaves, we revel in the sights and smells it brings to the autumn weather. But the happy colors can be hard to appreciate for some people. For some people, the autumn leaves serve as quite the head and backache in the way of yard work and maintenance.

Some folks just aren’t cut out for raking, gathering and bagging up leaves. Some folks need a hand. That’s why St. Paul Lutheran Church is offering help for those who have recently lost someone, single mothers or people who might just need a little extra help. St. Paul Lutheran Church, located at 1100 S.E. Sharon Drive, is once again holding its annual Big Rake from noon to 4 p.m. on Nov. 4 and will be raking 40 yards for free.

St. Paul encourages everyone to come to its 10:45 a.m. Sunday worship service with a change of clothes, because after the service, a light lunch will be served at the Family Life Center, and then volunteers will receive a T-shirt along with lawn assignments. Everyone older than 5 is invited to help with the clean-up. Any equipment that can be brought from home for this project is greatly appreciated.

For those who can’t rake but still want to help, the church will accept leaf bag donations. Not only do people get their lawns cleaned up, they will also receive a donated pie, complementary of St. Paul and their bakers. Monetary donations are also appreciated to help with the cost of lunch, T-shirts, leaf bags and signs for the event.
