Alice Ludwig Kapsa, passed away on Tuesday, Oct. 16th, 2012 at Mercy Medical Center in Des Moines. A Mass of Christian burial will be held at 2:00 p.m. Monday, October 22nd at the Basilica of St. John Catholic Church, 1915 University Ave.
Visitation will be on Sunday October 21st from 4-6 p.m. (with a prayer service starting at 5:30 p.m.) at Dunn’s Funeral Home, 2121 Grand Ave in Des Moines and on Monday, October 22nd, 12 noon to 1:30 pm. A private burial will later be held in Des Plaines, Illinois.
Alice Betty Larson was born October 5th, 1926 on a farm south of Paullina, Iowa. Her parents were Ole and Gertrude (nee Anderson) Larson. Raised on a farm with her 4 sisters and one brother she was preceded in death by her twin sisters Annette (Mortensen) and Jeanette (Kletschke), one brother, Eldon Larson as well as her parents. Two surviving sisters are Arlene DeJong of Kennewick, WA and Eleanor Carlson of Meriden, Iowa.
Alice was married to Wallace Kent (1946-47) who died in an auto accident and to Benard V. “Bud” Ludwig for 29 years until his death in 1979. Alice was a devoted mother to Patricia Ann Baird of Adna, WA (61) and Steven Benard Ludwig of Waukee, IA (58). She was a loving grandmother to Jeffrey (Ashley), Erika and Emily Baird, son and daughters of her daughter Patricia and husband, Rob Baird. She will be missed by two great grand children, Kenwyn and Heather, and many nieces and nephews.
Alice enjoyed working and socializing with people. She was a talented sales clerk and buyer for Younkers-Davidson in Sioux City as a young woman. Later in life she worked in retail sales as a hobby. She was interested in golf and was an avid golfer for many years with her husband, Bud.
She was a very good bridge player and enjoyed the game hosting bridge events for most of her adult life. Alice was adventurous and traveled to Europe when she was 66 as well as vacationing in Mexico and the Caribbean. In later life she passed the time working crossword puzzles, playing bridge and Wii Bowling at her independent living facility. Alice was an active Catholic and participated in church volunteer groups when she was raising her family in Park Ridge. She lived in Park Ridge (IL) during the ’60s and ’70s and resided in the San Diego area during the ’80s and ’90s for 16 years until moving to Des Moines in 2005 to be near her son. Although Alice experienced much adversity during her life, she will always be remembered for her caring and positive attitude.
