October Happenings in Greene County

As the weather cools down, activities with Jefferson Park & Recreation are beginning to heat up!  Stop by the Greene County Community Center (204 W. Harrison st) for more information on the following upcoming classes or to register.

Youth Wrestling

A wrestling opportunity is available for all youth grade K-6th grade.

For the youngest wrestlers K-2 Wrestling begins November 19 and ends February 21.  Youth will meet on Mondays & Thursdays from 6:00-7:00 pm.  Cost for the program is $30.00.  The price includes a shirt.

For youth grades 3-6, wrestling begins also November 19 and will last through February 21.  Advanced wrestlers will meet on Monday and Thursday evenings from 7:00-8:30 pm.  Cost for the program is $45.00.  The fee includes a shirt and use of a singlet.

All groups will meet at the High School Wrestling Room.  The deadline to register for both programs is November 9.

Youth Basketball League

A recreational basketball league is available for youth grades 3-6. League practices begin the week November 5 and ends December 22.  Youth will be placed onto teams.  Teams will practice as a group once during the week.  Girls’ teams will practice on Thursday evenings.  Boys’ teams will practice Tuesday evenings.  Practices will be held at the Jefferson-Scranton Elementary.  Games will be played on Saturday mornings beginning November 17 at the Greene County Community Center and in surrounding communities.   If a child does not have the JPRD issued reversible jersey for basketball the fee for the program is $40.00.  If a child already has the jersey, cost is $30.00.  Youth should register by October 19.

3-day girls Basketball Camp

This camp for 3rd-6th grade girls will be led by head ram girls basketball coach, Chad Morton.  The camp will be held at the Jefferson-Scranton Elementary on October 29, 30 and November 1 from 3:30-5:00 pm.  The fee for camp is $5.00.  Registrations are due by October 28.

Middle School Girls Pre Season Basketball Camp

This camp, led by head ram basketball coach Chad Morton, will help prepare girls in grade 7th and 8th for their upcoming season.  Camp will be held at the Jefferson-Scranton Middle School Monday, October 22 through Friday, October 26 from 3:30-5:00 pm.  The cost for the weeklong camp is $15.00.  Registrations are due October 19.

Mini Basketball

Mini Basketball is an introductory basketball program for youth in 1st & 2nd grade.  The program will meet at the Jefferson-Scranton elementary gym on Saturdays beginning November 3 through December 14 from 9:30-10:30 am.  On Friday, December 14 youngsters will display their skills at half time of the Greene County Ram girls’ home game.  Cost for the program is $15.00.  A second session will be held in January as a continuation of the session beginning November 3.  Youth are expected to participate in the first session to participate in session two.  Registration deadline for part 1 of Mini Basketball is October 26.

Zombie Run

This zombie infested adventure race will be full of obstacles to complete and zombies to dodge for boys and girls in 5th-8th grade.  Complete the course and the obstacles without becoming a zombie (become a zombie by losing flag belt).  Prizes will be awarded based on finish (dead or undead).  The run will be on Monday, October 29 at Daubendiek Park with a start time of 5:30 pm.  If registered prior to October 24 fee is $5.00.  If registered on or after the 24th, the race fee will be $10.00.

Halloween Party

In cooperation with the Jefferson Chamber of Commerce and the Jefferson Public Library, several Halloween related activities will be available for youth ages 2 years to 5th grade, to enjoy at the Greene County Community Center.  The FREE event will be from 4:00-5:00 pm on Thursday, October 25.
