Perry Public Library will present a program concerning Social Security and how married couples can maximize their lifetime benefits on Tuesday evening, Oct. 23 at 6:30 – 7:30 pm in the library’s large meeting room.
If you are in that 50ish age range, your thoughts are turning towards retirement and wondering if you have been doing all the right things to retire when you want to retire.
Some married couples often make the mistake of filing for their Social Security benefits based solely on their age, as if each were single. This is a mistake and could cost the couple tens of thousands of dollars over their retirement.
Because of the marriage, spousal benefits can be elected in order to receive benefits now, and then changed later to the spouse’s own higher benefit. This in itself is worth thousands of dollars to the couple. Don’t leave this money on the table.
It is extremely important to keep in mind that one person in the marriage is going to live longer than the other and possibly for a considerable amount of time. How much the surviving spouse receives over the rest of their lifetime will depend on the age when elected and benefit received by the deceased. Don’t shortchange your spouse. There is so much more to consider. Don’t miss this.
When a couple files for maximum lifetime benefits, there are 81 possible age combinations to consider and nine possible switch strategies.
When planning your retirement, it is important to integrate your other assets and income sources with your Social Security planning, because proper planning may help your own assets last longer. Starting now will provide you with the largest number of options later.
This presentation provides ideas and filing strategies to help married couples get the maximum lifetime benefit from Social Security. Therefore, if you are married, between ages 55 and 68, have not filed or have filed and want to see if you can correct your filing, this one-hour presentation can mean saving thousands of dollars in benefits for you and your spouse.
The presentation is free, but registration is required. Please call the library at 465-3569 to register.
