Friends of the Library Month

Posted October 03, 2012 in Community Featured, Clear Lake

October is National Friends of the Library Month. The Clear Lake Public Library is most fortunate to have an active, creative and high-energy Friends group.

The Friends of the Clear Lake Public Library were established in 1980 and since that time have provided ongoing financial and volunteer support for a great variety of library projects and programs.

“The library has always played such an important role in my life and in my family’s life,” said Friends president Laura Nicholson. “I truly enjoy being able to give something back by being an active Friends member.” Other Friends’ board members are Jill Bale, Wade Bendickson, Joyce Benes, Jeanne Burgart, Rhonda Juhlin, Tamara Orte, Lisa Pope, Ann Thomsen and Maxine Worlsey.

The Friends provide funding for all adult and youth programs including the Summer Reading Program, Winter Reading Program and the Iowa Storytelling Festival. They purchase computers, furnishings, books and media. They also provide access to electronic resources such as Tumblebooks, an online collection of automated picture books, and books for young readers in eBook and audio book formats. Friends also provide funding for FREEGAL downloadable music. Friends volunteers provide support for a variety of events and activities.

It is easy to become a Friend. You can pick up a membership form at the library or find one online at the library website www.clibrary.org. Membership contributions are the Friends’ primary source of income. Considerable funds are also raised through the Friends’ Book Sale which is ongoing and available for browsing during the library’s regular hours of operation, and by the Green Library Program which recycles donations of computer ink cartridges and used cell phones.

Friends members can support the library in many ways:
• Attend programs and events.
• Spread the good word about library services and programs that you enjoy.
• Use your library card often to check out book and media and to access electronic resources.
• Share your ideas about ways in which the library can do an even better job of serving our community.

Our library is very friendly with a welcoming, service-oriented staff and a great Friends of the Library group committed to enriching your library experience.
