In July we began construction on the satellite Fire Station on 62nd Avenue on the west side of Johnston. On Monday, we will break ground for a Public Safety Building to be built on Merle Hay Road, just north of NW 63rd Place. The satellite Fire Station will provide critical fire protection services to residents living on Johnston’s west side. The Public Safety Building will be the main facility for both the Police and Fire Departments.
A year ago the public safety building referendum had just passed and we knew we had the support of Johnston residents to proceed with construction of the buildings. At that time, however, it still felt like a dream. With construction now underway, it’s feeling more like a reality as we begin to see the results of the important decision our residents made to make Johnston safer for all who work and live here.
Johnston residents voted to approve spending of not more than $14 million for the buildings. The successful bids on both buildings came in under the approved amount and, better yet, under the architect’s estimates. We are well on our way to fulfilling our promise to the voters that the projects will be completed under budget and on time.
Our priority has always been to make sure the buildings are functional. First and foremost, they must support the police and firefighters in providing the best service possible to Johnston residents. They have been designed to be functional but also attractive, however not excessively so. We want Johnston residents to be proud of the public buildings we have in our community.
You’ve heard me say it many times before – public safety is the most important service we, as a city, provide to our residents, schools and businesses. We have the best police officers and firefighters around and we equip them well. Soon they will also have the facilities they need to do the job for us.
Please join us on Monday, September 17 at 3:00 for the groundbreaking ceremony of the Public Safety Building. The groundbreaking will take place at 6373 Merle Hay Road with parking available across the street at the Lions Club.
