Every month I host a Mobile Mayor event somewhere in Johnston to give residents an opportunity to share concerns, questions and suggestions about our community and the services the city provides. Being out and about around town is the best way to find out what people are thinking.
Sunday night I participated with other city officials and staff in the second annual Night with the Neighbors – kind of Mobile Mayor supersized. The purpose of Night with the Neighbors is to provide residents in neighborhoods an opportunity to get together and to get to know one another. It is designed also to allow neighborhoods to meet and to share their thoughts with city department heads, city council members and the mayor.
This year city officials and department heads visited three neighborhoods – Green Meadows, Adventure Ridge, and Green Meadows West. The city manager and the city’s department heads talked about what they do to provide services to Johnston residents, highlighting current projects and activities of interest. Silly Sally was present (in full costume) on behalf of the Library Department to entertain the children with a story. The Fire, Police and Public Works Departments brought their trucks, cars and other equipment for the children (and adults) to see and explore.
This year’s Night with the Neighbors was a huge success, thanks to all who organized and participated in it. If you are interested in being a host neighborhood next year, please contact Cheryl Heid at the Johnston Public Library – phone 515.278.5233 ext. 213.
