Room to Roam

Posted September 05, 2012 in Community Featured, Clear Lake

In the heart of rural Iowa, Sam and Marilyn Hasapopoulos are enjoying a slice of urban living at its best, and they didn’t even have to leave their beloved Clear Lake.

With 2,600 square feet of space inside, Sam and Marilyn Hasapopoulos still enjoy their second floor terrace overlooking City Park the best.

“We’ve been here five years, and we just love it,” Marilyn says.

The townhome across from City Park on Main Avenue would fit right in on a strip of upscale row houses in any metropolitan area, but it comes with advantages that big city living doesn’t often offer — friendly neighbors, easy streets to navigate, and more living space than a lot of stand-alone homes.

With 2,600 square feet, the three-story home has room to roam, even when the couple welcomes children and grandchildren for the holidays.

In designing the layout of their home, the Hasapopouloses chose to keep the first floor wide open, which makes it versatile for small or large gatherings.

The second floor is accessed by either an open staircase or a cozy elevator that Marilyn made feel much larger by covering one wall with a mirror. The elevator makes bringing in the groceries handy, and her grandchildren love it as well.

“They love to ride in here,” Marilyn says.

The second floor is where Sam and Marilyn do most of their living. An open concept kitchen and living room is airy and spacious, but in the summer their favorite place is the terrace overlooking City Park. They have the best seat in town for just about any celebration.

A larger terrace is located off the second floor master bedroom, but the couple enjoys the activity on Main Avenue even more. A walk-in closet and large master bath consolidates most daily living activities on the second floor. Additional bath or half/baths are located on each of the other floors.

The third story loft extends halfway across the home, overlooking the living room. A Murphy bed folds down to welcome overnight guests and folds up out of the way when not in use.

Finally, a two-and-a-half-stall garage makes winter easy in this big city condo in friendly, small town style.
