Inspired by her own amazing teachers, parents and family, Sarah Knute has always wanted to be a teacher. The encouraging words of her family helped her to follow her dream and pursue a teaching career.
Knute grew up not far from Adel, in West Des Moines. She attended the University of Iowa to become a teacher. Throughout high school and college, Knute worked at a daycare. She also taught dance classes and then taught for three years at a private school prior to teaching for ADM.
“I’ve always loved working with kids,” Knute says. “I grew up with them surrounding me, as my mom had an in-home daycare. I worked with kids throughout high school and helped teach dance to kids of all ages from junior high through high school.” Immersed in that environment, it is no surprise that Knute “can’t remember a time that I haven’t wanted to teach. It is the best decision I’ve ever made.”
This upcoming school year will be the start of Knute’s fifth year teaching for the district. Her past four years have been spent at the DeSoto Intermediate School teaching fifth grade. This fall will bring a move to the Middle School as she is now the sixth grade writing teacher. Her enthusiasm for writing will help students transition to the more challenging requirements of middle school and high school.
Knute describes a typical day as fun. Her favorite part about her job is the students.
“Getting to know each of them as both learners and kids when working with them every day is the best,” Knute exclaims. “I gain happiness in the fact that students are growing and working hard to reach academic and social goals.”
In her free time, Knute enjoys spending time with her husband, Nick, family and friends. She loves being outside when the weather is fabulous and warm. Knute likes a wide variety of hobbies including reading, writing, watching movies, attempting to golf, cheering on the Hawkeyes, cooking and dancing. She also works at the Waukee YMCA in the Child Watch room.
Knute has been married just over a year. The couple recently bought a home in Waukee and has spent much of the summer settling into it. They have a German Shorthair named Sam.
