This home at 902 Grove Street is so warm and cozy, it feels like it hugs you when you walk through the door. Built in 1914 the property was purchased by Dan and Lynette Harvey in 1998.
The two-story house has five rooms, a front and back porch, and a detached garage. Yellow pine was the preferred wood of the 19th century and is prevalent throughout including the crafted woodwork and an ornate hand-carved front door. A signature feature of the house is a recreated staircase designed in keeping with the Harvey’s Stickley furniture and the vintage charm of the home.
A stylish centerpiece in the bathroom is the original claw foot tub with ceramic faucets. The original copper hardware is unaltered and in perfect condition.
All the walls were plastered and then papered with a vinyl striped washable wall covering coordinated carefully with the area rugs. Lynette uses beautiful Scandinavian rugs called “coat rack rugs” for table covers.
Both Dan and Lynette are collectors. Antiques and art enrich every room of this home. Dan collects religious art and pre-1900 clocks while Lynette centers her interest on gathering porcelain chocolate pots, tea sets, lemonade sets, Wexford glass and artist’s prints of little girls in pink dresses. An avid reader, Lynette read every single book in the Exira library when she was growing up. After inheriting her grandmother’s book collection, she has continued it by adding old and rare books. This collection now has more than 1,000 books displayed in the home library. She prefers 1800 literature, and the most treasured on her shelves are those written by English novelists and poets of the Victorian era, the Brontë sisters.
A historic heirloom flower garden in the backyard is in perfect harmony with the house. Some of the plants come from Lynette’s schoolyard and some from her home churchyard and, of course, some from Harvey’s Greenhouse and Garden Center, which was founded by Dan’s grandfather and later owned by Dan’s father, the late Don Harvey.
Dan grew up in Adel. He is the owner of Dan’s Towing and Service. His stepson, Mark Downing, has worked with Dan since starting the business. You might see Buster Brown and Bandit, the Harvey’s two Boston Terriers, riding in the wrecker with Dan or Mark.
Lynette’s family hails from Denmark, but she grew up in Exira.
