A Taste For Culture

Posted August 31, 2012 in Community Blogs, Downtown

A couple years ago, over a thousand Des Moines business professionals were surprised by a flash mob attempt at the Greater Des Moines Partnership’s Annual Dinner. The group of business leaders chanted “We’re number one!” as they marched to the front with red, giant foam fingers to celebrate a recent ranking.

Our community has a lot of national recognition.

#1 Best Cities for Families – Kiplinger, July 2012

#4 Best Places for Business and Careers – Forbes, June 2012

The list continues, and you can find it at www.desmoinesmetro.com.

Contributing to these rankings is our appreciation and hunger for the arts and culture. This has become clear to the Downtown Chamber in recent weeks as we unveiled the Des Moines Culture Connection Crawl on September 13th, an event highlighting the food, arts, and culture found in the East Village, the Core/Riverwalk, and Western Gateway business districts. The response has been outstanding from both sponsoring companies and eager participants.

As we head into this fall, we can look forward to the WOW! Wonder of Words Festival, ArtStop (beginning the day after the Culture Crawl), and the opening of dance and theatre seasons, to name a few.

Celebrate the arts and culture that make our community whole by sampling new events this year and becoming familiar with the organizations that integrate these attributes into their missions. When you get the chance, express your appreciation, or contribute your own talents to keeping Des Moines at the top of these rankings.
