Died August 20, 2012

Leo Irvin Lovell, age 95, of Scranton, Iowa, passed away on Monday, August 20, 2012 at Deerfield Assisted Living in Urbandale, Iowa.

Funeral services will be held at 10:30 A.M. on Friday, August 24, 2012 at the Scranton United Methodist Church with Rev. Charles Thompson officiating. Friends may call after 5:00 P.M. on Thursday at the Dahn and Woodhouse Funeral Home in Scranton. The casket will be moved to the church at 8:30 A.M. on Friday where visitation will resume until the time of service. Organist for the service will be Laura McKnight and congregational hymns will be “Amazing Grace” and “I Love to Tell the Story”. Casket bearers will be Randy Hughes, Jeff Hughes, Cody Hughes, Doug Carmen, Glen Christensen and Dale Hoyt. Honorary casket bearers will be the Gideons. Burial will be in the Scranton Township Cemetery.

Born on December 11, 1916 in rural Guthrie County, Iowa, he was the son of Irvin and Mabel (Rabuck) Lovell. Leo’s mother passed away when he was two years old and his family moved to South Dakota where he attended high school until the eleventh grade. In 1932 his family moved back to rural Greene County and he graduated from Coon Rapids High School in 1933. Following high school he farmed with his father for four years. He was married to Pearl Hedges on February 22, 1941 at the home of her parents. The couple farmed and raised their family on Pearl’s family farm in Willow Township. Leo was a member of the Scranton United Methodist Church where he had taught Sunday school and he was a lay leader of the Ft. Dodge district of the United Methodist Church. He served on the Scranton Telephone Company board for 27 years, he served on the Greene County election board, and he was a member of Farm Bureau. He enjoyed woodworking, traveling, making latch hook rugs, making stocking caps for several charities, watching baseball games, playing Cribbage and card games, and being with his family and friends.

Leo is survived by two daughters: Jane Lovell of Scranton and Mary Sue Thompson and her husband Les of Troy, Missouri; five grandchildren: Jennifer Allyn and her husband Todd of Urbandale, Iowa, Melissa Moody and her husband Mike of Winfield, Missouri, Audry Thompson of Dexter, Missouri, John Thompson and his wife Grace of DeSoto, Missouri, and Phil Thompson of Virginia Beach, Virginia; and one great grandson Andrew Lovell Allyn; and a sister-in-law Jean Hedges of Scranton.

Leo was preceded in death by his parents, his wife Pearl in 2000, a daughter Nancy Lovell in 1982, two sisters: Edna Lovell and Tamma Hulbert, and two brothers: Roy and Ora Lovell.
