1,800 dogs from 45 states and several foreign countries will compete at the eagerly-anticipated annual Des Moines Dog Shows, Obedience Trials and Rally Trials September 7, 8, and 9, 2012 at the Varied Industries Building on the Iowa State Fairgrounds. The shows, approved by the American Kennel Club, are open to the public and feature one of the largest junior showmanship entries in the country. Admission is free.
The three day cluster of dog shows begins Friday, September 7th, at 8:00a.m. with Best of Breed competitions, obedience trials and rally trials sponsored by 15 specialty breed clubs.
All breed dog shows will be held Saturday and Sunday September 8th and 9th, beginning at 8:00a.m. each day and concluding late each afternoon with Group and Best in Show competitions judged by internationally respected purebred dog authorities. Junior showmanship, obedience trials and rally trials will also be held each day. Meet the Breeds offers spectators a chance to learn more about various breeds of dogs.
The three day cluster of dog shows will feature over 150 breeds of dogs, including several rare breeds and many dogs entered at Westminster (the New York show televised each February). Exhibitors from all over the country and spectators from across Iowa, inject more than $750,000 into the local economy while attending the shows.
Food and refreshments will be available from concession stands. More than 40 vendors from across the country will offer unusual dog-related items for sale.
Donations of unopened pet related items will be collected to benefit the Pet Project Midwest.
