As the summer winds down, many kids will be preparing to go back to school. But some youth will not only be heading back to class, they’ll be kicking it with Jesus during the Upward Soccer season.
The Upward Soccer season through Walnut Creek Community Church will kick off with practices the week of Aug. 27 and games starting on Saturday, Sept. 8. Upward is a faith-based sports league open to both boys and girls. Walnut Creek Upward is hosted by Walnut Creek Community Church and The Downtown Church and is one of three Upward Sports leagues in the Des Moines area. Each team will play seven games, all held at Lawson Elementary School, 5450 N.W. 62nd Ave. in Johnston, with the season concluding at the end of October. Games will be played between 9 a.m. and noon. Registration is open for children ages 4 though sixth grade. Cost is $70 and includes an Upward reversible jersey and matching socks. (Matching shorts are available for $15.) Awana will begin Wednesday, Sept. 5 at 6:25 p.m. The weekly ministry includes scripture memorization challenges, Biblical lessons and fun games. The program is open to children ages 3 through sixth grade. For more information, contact the church office at 279-8312.
Windsor Heights Lutheran Church will host a WELCA Potluck and Bible Study on Thursday, Aug. 16 from 6 – 8 p.m. All women of the church are invited to attend. Please bring a dish to share.
Akaloo will start on Wednesday, Aug. 29 at 6 p.m. The weekly event is about discipleship, with members of the church coming together for worship, food, education and music.
The church will host its annual hog roast on Sunday, Aug. 26 following the 10:45 a.m. service. All members and families are welcome, and the Fellowship Committee invites everyone to bring a side dish or dessert to share.
Elderberries, a lively group of retired members who enjoy fellowship, meet the first Thursday of the month at 11:30 a.m. in Fellowship Hall. There is a buffet at noon, followed by a special program. For more information, contact Ruth Hiddleson at 225-1013.
