Vernetta Ruth Austin Dove

Vernetta Ruth Austin Dove, daughter of John Austin and Lula (Akins) Austin was born, December 3, 1923 in Lorimor, Iowa and passed from this life Saturday, August 11, 2012 at Mercy Hospital in Des Moines, Iowa at the age of 88 years.Vernetta graduated from Lorimor High School as her class salutatorian. She was united in marriage to Samuel Ralph Dove on March 12, 1944 in Rossville, Georgia. Vernetta worked for the ordinance plant near Des Moines during WW II, while Ralph served in the U.S. Army. Ralph returned home and together they operated Dove Trenching in Des Moines until 1963 when they moved to Osceola to begin farming. Vernetta was bookkeeper and partner, helping where needed. She moved to Indianola and shortly following, to Des Moines after Ralph passed away in 2009.

As a farm wife, Vernetta enjoyed gardening, canning and was a very good cook. She always made everything from scratch and was said to be able to grow anything, anywhere. She took great pride in her garden. Vernetta was a member of the Osceola Baptist Church and helped with the Baptist Ladies Aide.Vernetta was preceded in death by her husband Ralph; brothers, Alfred Bodtke, Ed Bodtke, Clair Austin, Clarence Austin, and Elmer Bodtke; sisters, Jean Yoakum and Vi Bodtke-Anneburg.

She leaves to cherish her memory, sons, Ralph L. (Maggie Grace) Dove of West Des Moines, Richard L (Linda) Dove of Pensacola, FL; five grandchildren, Melissa Ann (Thomas) Helm of Omaha, NE, Laura Christine Dove of Arlington, VA, Michelle Smithey of Pensacola, FL, Richard D. (Susan) Dove of Pensacola, FL, Angela (Richard) Malone of Pensacola, FL; six great-grandchildren, Madeline, Maxwell, Alexis, Brooklyn, Madelyn and Levi; sisters, Vera Moore of Mt.. Ayr, and Virginia Penfold of Indianola; brother, Charles Austin of Des Moines; sister-in-law, Martha Kay Overton of Des Moines; nephew who lived with them several years during his childhood, William Kent (Debbie) Austin of Creston, IA as well as other relatives and friends.
