Dorothy Jean Sunstrom

May 24, 1933 – August 6, 2012

Dorothy Sunstrom, age 79, of the Sunny View Care Center in Ankeny and formerly of Boone, died at the Mercy Hospice in Johnston on August 6, 2012.

Funeral services will be Friday, August 10, 2012, at 10:30 a.m. at the Schroeder Memorial Chapel at Sixth and Marshall. Burial will be in the Linwood Park Cemetery.

Dorothy was born in Waynoka, Oklahoma, on May 24, 1933, the daughter of Aaron and Dolly (Smelcer) Crook.

She married Raymond Martin in Boone on December 26, 1952. The couple later divorced.

On July 16, 1982, Dorothy married Robert ‘Bob’ Sunstrom in Boone.

For many years, Dorothy worked as a clerk at the former Randall’s Foods in Boone.

She enjoyed camping, growing roses, playing cards, crocheting, visiting Branson, Missouri, and socializing with family and friends especially on Friday nights.

She was a member and past president of the V.F.W. Auxiliary of Boone.

Dorothy is preceded in death by her parents, husband Bob, three brothers: Eugene, John, and Gerald, and three sisters: Lois, Doris, and Janice.

She is survived by a son Denny Martin and wife Deanna of Boone; two daughters Debi Dawson and husband Jim of Johnston and Pam Sargent and husband Eric of Boone; three step-sons Mike Sunstrom and wife Jody, Ron Sunstrom and wife Lisa, all of Boone, and Jeff Sunstrom and wife Linda of Ogden; a step-daughter Marsha Morris and husband Brian of St. Paul, Minnesota; two brothers Chester Crook and wife Diane of Mt. Home, Arkansas and Bill Crook of Grand Junction; two sisters Thelma Carter and husband Bob of Boone and Sharon Hathaway and husband Keith of Colbert, Oklahoma; nine grandchildren, nine great-grandchildren, 10 step-grandchildren, and two step great-grandchildren.

Friends may call at the Schroeder Memorial Chapel on Thursday from 2 until 8 p.m. where the family will be present from 6 until 8 p.m.

Visitation continues Friday from 8 a.m. until service time.

In memory of Dorothy, memorials may be directed to the family for a donation to Mercy Hospice in Johnston.
