From the street, this sprawling yellow house on a busy stretch of North Shore Drive appears large enough to serve as a duplex. But for Randy Hinton and Valerie Hayes, it’s just the right spot for a busy life, filled with friends and lake town living.
“We like everything about living on the lake,” Randy says.
“Except the wind,” Valerie quickly adds.
Summertime winds blowing in across the lake can get pretty feisty, Randy admits, but it’s a small price to pay for living in the heart of this beautiful city.
“You can see everywhere,” Randy says from his comfortable seat overlooking the lake. “The realtor told us, ‘You have the best lot on the lake.’ And maybe they always say that, but I kind of believe it here. It’s just perfect.”
With a 30-foot pontoon, two Jet Skis, and a 27-foot Cobalt anchored at their dock, the couple has plenty of ways to play or relax on the water. But their favorite activity is just cruising around the lake at a leisurely speed, enjoying the company of friends.
“We entertain probably three times a week in the summertime,” Valerie says. “We just have a lot of friends that drop by.”
For Valerie, one of the best times of day to come out is in the morning, when the air is a bit cooler, and enjoy a cup of coffee while the lake is still quiet.
“I like to watch the ducks and listen to the waves come in,” she says.
As for Randy, he doesn’t have a “favorite” time of day on the lake.
“Just about anytime out here is good,” he says.
They also enjoy their location, directly across the street from the Surf, and in walking distance to events going on downtown, as well as several nearby restaurants.
While homes on the lake are always close together — and the couple enjoys the friendship of a few neighbors — the home still has a feeling of privacy.
Inside, the couple has plenty of room to spread out. The master bedroom sprawls across the entire lakeside of the second story, providing excellent views year-round. Downstairs, the lakeside is home to a 40-foot, heated lap pool.
“The best lot on the lake?”
It sure feels like it from here.
